Sewer line issues in commercial buildings can quickly disrupt normal operations, especially when the problem is not easily accessible or requires more than standard tools to resolve.
At a commercial property in Coeur d’Alene, we were called in to address a clogged sewer line that had not been successfully cleared through previous service attempts. Situations like this often require a more detailed diagnosis to identify the exact cause of the blockage.
Commercial plumbing systems can present unique challenges, particularly when components like backwater valves are involved. These systems are designed to protect buildings from sewer backups, but when they fail, they can also become the source of the problem.
Diagnosing the Sewer Line Blockage
After inspecting the system, the issue was traced to the main backwater valve. The valve had become clogged with debris and had frozen in the closed position, preventing normal flow through the sewer line.
Because the valve was stuck and inaccessible using standard tools, additional methods were required to address the problem.
Projects like this are part of the work we perform through our commercial plumbing services, where proper diagnosis is essential before repairs can begin.

Clearing the Line and Accessing the Valve
To reach the affected area, specialized equipment was used to safely thaw the line several feet below grade. Once access was restored, the blockage was cleared and the backwater valve was removed for inspection.
After evaluating the condition of the valve, it was determined that replacement was necessary to restore proper function and prevent future issues.
Restoring the Sewer System
A new backwater valve was installed and the sewer line was tested to confirm that flow had returned to normal. With the system functioning properly again, the building’s plumbing was restored and back in operation.
This type of repair highlights the importance of identifying the root cause of a sewer line issue rather than relying on repeated attempts to clear a blockage without addressing the underlying problem.
We regularly perform sewer line repairs and diagnostics throughout the area. You can learn more about our services on our Coeur d’Alene plumbing page.
